In 2006, God visited me while in high school in my room. He said: “Open the Bible and read Joshua 1:1-9”. I read it but with so much confusion. I had so many questions…THERE HAS TO BE A MISTAKE! I was full of doubt, of self-hate, low self-esteem and barely knew my purpose.
How can such a big and mighty God chose someone like me? I thought that God chose those who were perfect, but I was wrong-God qualifies those He calls. He called me in a time when I was full of doubt and suicidal thoughts-and He encouraged me through Joshua 1:1-9 to be strong and courageous. The more I grew spiritually, reading the Word and praying-the more clarity I had about myself. I realized that the world wanted me to fit in: to dress, speak and act like everyone-but I realized I was made for more. I was made to stand out and be the light that the world needs desperately. I understood that I was created to be a reflection of Jesus Christ through my life, my choices and the work done in my community for those in need. Born in Burundi and raised in Rwanda- I understood the importance of community from a younger age. I believe that people flourish spiritually, emotionally and financially where they feel valued and support in a community.
Unfortunately, many young adults feel isolated despite spending hours on social media. They are crushing under the pressure to be perfect and fit in. God cares about young adults. God sees them and wants them to know that they are loved and mostly, that they were made for more. They were made to be bold, to change and be the light of Jesus Christ at their schools, in their families, and with their friends.
Child health experts find that adolescent suicide is increasing twice the rate of a decade ago, making it second only to motor vehicle accidents as a leading cause of death. I am honored and humbled that God would call me in such a time like this to spread the love of God, the life in Jesus and the healing in the Holy Spirit to young adults struggling with depression, self-hate, low self-esteem, and suicidal thoughts. I know without a doubt that I am where I am BECAUSE of Jesus, THROUGH Jesus and FOR Jesus.
Please join me in prayers. I need your prayers and support because I know that as the body of Christ, there is so much we can for one another. There are many young adults struggling in our families, churches, and communities with their faith. They need to be encouraged, as God encouraged me years ago. They need to know that God knows their names and Jesus Christ died on the cross for them so they can have eternal life.
God is calling me to reach to young adults in Charlotte, North Carolina with a message.
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
My desire is to also reach out to the African diaspora in the Charlotte area through monthly fellowships. Thank you for your support and prayers, Ornella Umubyeyi
